What is DMT?
What even is that❓DMT‼️
🔮N-Dimethyltryptamine, also known as DMT is usually derived from the ~Psychotria viridis~ bush. It’s been used in Ayahuasca tea for religious ceremonies in South American cultures for thousands of years🌳
😊The drug is a selective Serotonin receptor agonist - meaning it mimics serotonin but activates receptors in novel patterns to produce its psychedelic effects. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter in our brains that controls our emotions, sleep cycle, and influences memory storage💫
💤DMT is naturally found in low concentrations in the human body. It is believed to be released in small amounts when dreaming, and released in a highly concentrated surge in the moments surrounding a person’s death. DMT is believed to detach your conscious experience from the physical sensations of your body. This is ideal in the moments preceding one’s death, so that the brain isn’t aware of the body being ⚰️
🌴The modern method of consumption is smoking dried leaves from the ~Psychotria viridis~ bush. The traditional method is drinking these leaves combined with other herbs in Ayahuasca tea. Drinking DMT on its own will not cause a “trip” because your digestive system breaks down the DMT before it can reach your brain. Ayahuasca tea contains DMT with a second herb that prevents your digestive system from breaking down the DMT and thus allows the to reach the brain and produce its psychoactive effects🎨
⏰The time to DMT sensation onset is usually 1-10 minutes when smoked, and about 30 min for Ayahuasca tea. The peak effects occur at about 90 minutes after onset and the effects last 4-6 hours🕜
🤪The perceptual effects of DMT modify the user’s conscious experience - including transient periods of introspection, psychedelic and/or spiritual visions, heightened emotions, and vivid recollection of memories. The physical effects may include tingling sensations, dilated pupils, tremors, increased pulse and blood pressure👀
📉The risks of DMT include a bad trip, and the potential to trigger psychological disturbances (similar to LSD). A DMT fatality has never been recorded in humans and is considered to be non-addictive‼️
