What Even is Peyote?

What Even is Peyote?

🌵Peyote is a naturally occurring, strong psychedelic found in a species of cacti native to the American Southwest. Like other psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin, Peyote causes hallucinations and out of body experiences👻

🌸Peyote is found in the buttons (flowers) of the Lophophora williamsii cacti species. These buttons contain the psychedelic chemical mescaline. This parallels how some mushrooms contain psilocybin. Native American tribes like the Kiowa and Comanche have traditionally used peyote spiritual ceremonies. In 1994, mescaline use was legalized specifically for use in rituals by members of the Native American Church🏜

💊Like many psychedelics, Peyote mimics serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters in the brain, causing activation of these receptors in novel patterns to produce its psychedelic effects. Because Peyote only mimics serotonin and dopamine, long term brain damage or overdose caused by Peyote has not been reported👌

👹Risk factors also mirror those of other psychedelics. See TACO’s posts on LSD or Shrooms for tips to avoid as many risk factors as possible😧
