What are Poppers?

What Even are Poppers?

🎉Alkyl nitrite or Butyl Nitrite, commonly known as Poppers, Snappers, or Rush, is a recreational drug that is typically inhaled from a small bottle to produce euphoric and sexually arousing effects. Since Poppers also relax smooth muscle, they are oftentimes used to facilitate penetration during anal sex🧘‍♀️

⏰The sensation created by Poppers begins within about 30 seconds of inhalation and lasts 3-5 minutes. The chemicals in Poppers are rapidly absorbed by through the lungs and are then broken down by the body once they have circulated through the bloodstream📉

🫀💉Poppers cause blood vessels to expand and widen, which may cause: headache, a flushed face, increase in heart rate, dizziness, and muscle relaxation😵

🙅The nitrites in Poppers can become toxic to the human body because of their oxidative effects on red blood cells and renders them unable to carry oxygen. Essentially this means that with too many Nitrites in the body, cells may become suffocated by lack of oxygen - therefore tissues in the body will be unable to sustain their functions. When this occurs, Cyanosis develops. Symptoms of Cyanosis are blue skin, lips, and nails due to the low oxygen circulation. As methemoglobin levels increase, coma, seizures, and even death can occur😱

👀Other side effects of Poppers are nausea and disorientation. If the liquid Nitrites contact the eye, about 60% of the time this leads to severe visual impairment and only 10-15% of these patents will regain normal vision in the affected eye after 2 years. Additional side effects are nausea and skin irritation upon contact🤢

⚠️In terms of lethal dosage, there is still not enough research to accurately determine the lethal dose. Based on current research, theoretically 40-60mL of Amyl Nitrite (3-4 bottles of Poppers) would cause mortality - due to severe lack of oxygen in the blood. Those with pre-existing heart or blood conditions would be advised not to use Poppers to avoid dangerous complications⛔️
